From Tata Nexon to Maruti Dzire, here are the cars which aced the Global NCAP tests in 2024.
Safety has become one of the most important factors to be considered while purchasing a car in the last decade. The increased focus on safety is a result of an initiative called “ Safer Cars for India” by Global New Car Assessment Program (GNCAP) more than a decade ago. Every year multiple cars are sent to GNCAP to determine where they stand at safety.
In 2024 as well, many made in India cars were crash tested by GNCAP to determine their safety ratings. Here’s a look at cars which scored 5-star ratings at GNCAP in the outgoing year.
1. Tata Nexon
The year started with Tata Nexon scoring 5-star safety ratings for both child and adult occupancy. In February this year, GNCAP crash tested the heavily updated Nexon which secured 32.22 points in adult occupancy and 44.52 points in child occupancy. Interestingly, Nexon was the first model to achieve a 5-star safety rating as part of the Safer Cars for India initiative when it was tested in 2018. The updated model launched in 2023 comes with enhanced safety features such as six airbags and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as standard.
2. Kia Carens
Kia Carens was a strange case as it was crash tested twice by GNCAP this year. In the first attempt, it secured a 0-star rating for adults and 4-star rating for child occupancy. The substandard results led to Kia making some quick improvements on the lifestyle MPV which later went on to score a 3-star safety rating for adults and a 5-star rating for children. In both cases, Carnival offered six airbags, and a 3 points belt for all seating positions.
3. Tata Safari / Harrier
Tata Motors has been hitting it out of the park when it comes to car safety. Last year the Tata Safari and Harrier achieved a five star safety rating for adult and child occupant protection with the highest score in Global NCAP. This year, Tata Motors submitted Safari and Harrier for further Safer Choice conformity tests, with the models meeting performance and volume requirements for Autonomous Emergency Breaking (AEB), speed assistance and Blind Spot Detection (BSD) systems. The successful tests meant Tata Motors was awarded the Safer Choice Award for Safari and Harrier– an accolade which is only reserved for select automakers.
4. Maruti Suzuki Dzire
However, the biggest surprise came towards the end of the year when a Maruti Suzuki was awarded a 5-star safety rating. In November, the fourth-gen Dzire was launched which scored a 5-star rating for adult and a 4-star child occupancy, making it the first Maruti to gain a 5-star safety rating. The new Dzire comes with six airbags, ESC and pedestrian protection as standard across all variants.
